Projects vs. Programs
Citizen International executes “projects” rather than implementing long-term “programs.” This allows us to be agile and responsive to new needs and fresh ideas. Traditional development programs and social awareness campaigns can grow so large that they become the end, rather than the means for achieving an end. People become so entrenched and attached to the programs, that they never actually end, and in the worst cases, inadvertently perpetuate the problem they initially set out to solve.
Metrics
Measuring success of charitable programs is a hot topic these days. Funders (especially government donors) demand to see measurable results or threaten to cut funds. The problem is, programs and projects that address social issues are often difficult to measure, because the ultimate goal is behavior change. And no single organization or program can ever claim sole responsibility for behavior change, when there is an amalgamation of programs, circumstances and events at play. One can’t see the forest for the trees.
Citizen International uses the common sense approach. If you like our ideas and projects, and they make sense to you, please support them. Each project has defined goals and will be measured using surveys and anecdotal evidence to the extent possible. These goals and metrics will be available to our members and interested parties via the website.
